Yoga For Beginners Tucson: 3 Similarities Between Yoga And Star Wars

3 Similarities Between Yoga and Star Wars

In Blog, Yoga For Beginners Tucson

The newest Star Wars movie — “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” — comes out this weekend … are you ready? Here at Yoga Pod Tucson, we certainly are! We’ve been thinking about it for a while now, and the similarities between yoga and Star Wars (or yogis and Jedis, if you will) are too obvious to ignore any longer.

With opening night this weekend, we thought we’d dive into the galaxy far far away and the yoga studio so you can see the similarities as well! Here at Yoga Pod Tucson, we offer the yoga for beginners that you’ve been looking for. It allows you to build a strong foundation and become an advanced yogi (or should we say Jedi?) one yoga pose at a time. Force vs. Flow

You’ll most likely start to experience it during yoga for beginners and then experience it more and more often as you advance through your yoga practice: flow. In positive psychology, a flow state is known as being in the zone; you’re fully immersed in focus, involvement, and enjoyment. Does that sound anything like the force to you? Jedis let the force flow through them and use it for good.

Path of the Jedi vs. the Eightfold Path

Now, the path of the Jedi is focused on training and self-mastery, much like yoga is. Furthermore, members of the Jedi Order practice self-discipline, responsibility, public service, and non-attachment. These are similar to the yogi’s eightfold path, which includes the following characteristics:

  1. Yama (universal morality)
  2. Niyama (personal observances)
  3. Asana (poses)
  4. Pranayama (control of the breath)
  5. Pratyahara (control of the senses)
  6. Dharana (concentration)
  7. Dhyana (meditation)
  8. Samadhi (enlightenment)

Ujjayi Breath

Finally, this blog post would be remiss without mentioning “ujjayi breath.” It means “victorious breath” and it’s deep breathing that creates a signature sound in your throat. Some refer to it as the sound of the ocean — and many others have noted the similarities between it and Darth Vader’s breathing. Read more about it in 8 Yoga Terms Beginners Can Easily Learn.
