What to Expect During Your First Yoga Pod West Houston Class

Congratulations on your decision to try yoga or Yoga Pod West Houston for the first time! Either way, that’s great! Trying anything new for the first time is always nerve wracking for me, so I created a list of the top ten things you should know to expect. Knowing what to expect will ensure smooth sailing when you join us at Yoga Pod West Houston!

1. Show up early to the yoga studio.

Arrive at least 15 minutes before class starts. This leaves you time to get a feel for the yoga studio environment and chat with the instructor. Be sure to ask questions and let the teacher know if you have any injuries or special needs. You won’t be as stressed about trying something new if allow yourself some time to adjust.

2. Wear loose-fitting workout clothes or yoga pants.

For ladies, this means anything from shorts and sports bras to full-on matching yoga gear. Guys, you don’t have to buy a pair of yoga pants if you don’t want to. I hear from other yogis that they’re amazing, but loose-fitting basketball shorts and a t-shirt works just as well. You might want to wear compression shorts if you choose to wear loose-fitting shorts, as they might ride up during poses like downward facing dog.

3. Bring a water bottle, sweat towel, and your mat if you own one.

At our yoga studio, we have mats and towels for rent, as well as water and snacks to purchase. And for those of you with long hair—don’t forget your hair tie or headband!

4. Bring an open mind.

Yoga Pod West Houston offers multiple class formats and each instructor brings their own personal touch to the yoga class experience. Remember that there is no right or wrong way to do yoga. Give yourself permission to try them all! As a teacher who enjoys conquering challenges, my classes reflect that sense of adventure! If you need something a little more relaxing, you might try Yin Yoga. Find the class that works for you by looking at our class schedule!

5. Don’t eat for at least an hour or two before class.

I know my own body and can allow myself a small meal before practicing. If I eat a burger and fries, I’ll spend my entire practice feeling sick! Each person is different and it may take a little time to find what works for you. Play it safe for your first yoga class and come on an empty stomach.

6. Expect to feel out of your element—and know this is a good thing!

My first attempt at anything is always uncomfortable as I’m trying to figure things out. I tell my friends who want to try yoga for the first time to dive right in! The learning curve may appear steep, but by the second class you’ll be a pro.

7. Expect to sweat—and be pleasantly surprised if you don’t!

If you’re signed up for a heated yoga class—sweating is non-negotiable. If you’re taking a non-heated class, be careful not to schedule anything afterward that requires you look your best. This is a fitness class you’re taking. While I don’t sweat in all the classes I take, it is very likely to happen!

8. Release any apprehension you have about not being flexible enough.

Every instructor at Yoga Pod West Houston is knowledgeable about modifications for the poses. If you feel that you need a modification, let you teacher know. We are here for you!

9. Know that child’s pose is always an option.

If you feel overwhelmed or need a break, come down to your knees and take child’s pose until you’re ready to rejoin the class. Ask your instructor to show you this pose before class starts! This pose is a universal sign to yoga teachers that says, “Don’t worry. I just need a break.”

10. Relax and have fun.

It’s called a yoga practice, not yoga perfect. Relax and appreciate the chance to try something different.
